The customs and excise office has granted Rp 74.86 billion worth requests of import duty exemption as part of the government's policy to ease burden of businesses amid the global financial turmoil.

"As of June 1, we have received 26 requests," director of customs facility Kusdirman Iskandar said in a press conference Wednesday.

The requests were for import duty exemption of vehicle components, electronic components, shipping, intravenous therapy equipments and telematic equipments.

This year, the government has allocated Rp 2.5 trillion of import duty exemption for certain business sectors. Of the 2.5 trillion, about Rp 737.2 trillion has not been determined to be given to which sectors.

Kusdirman said Finance Ministry's fiscal policy office (BKF) would determine the sectors considering the global economic conditions.

"While for 2010, [the import duty exemption] will depend on requests [from businesses] and economic activities. It will be considered whether they deserve [exemptions]," he said.
