The Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force and the Jayapura Customs, Trade, and Excise Office (KPPBC TMP C Jayapura) have dismantled an illegal ammunition smuggling operation through the waters of Jayapura, Papua.

The Head of KPPBC TMP C Jayapura, Fungki Awaludin, stated that the discovery began following reports of a large motorised longboat carrying illegal goods towards Papua New Guinea (PNG). He noted that the joint team subsequently located the vessel on Saturday (3/10) at approximately 10:36 PM WIT.

Fungki explained that during the inspection attempt, the longboat crew tried to evade authorities and discarded several items into the sea. Following a sweep of the area, officers discovered three packages containing 34 slop (340 packs) of tobacco without excise stamps, as well as 200 rounds of 5.56mm calibre ammunition.

“The illegal cigarettes fall under our authority, while the ammunition has been handed over to the Papua Regional Police through the Directorate of General Criminal Investigation for further action,” he explained in a written statement on Wednesday (7/10).

The Head of Public Relations for the Cartenz Peace Operation, Kombes Pol Yusuf Sutejo, confirmed that the evidence, consisting of a black leather bag and 200 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, was handed over on Monday (5/10).

He stated that investigators from the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force and the Papua Regional Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate are currently investigating the origin of the ammunition, including the perpetrators and the intended destination. “We are investigating who sent the goods, where they originated, and their destination. We will also take statements from several witnesses to help identify the transport vehicle used,” he explained.

Yusuf added that the investigation is also aimed at uncovering the distribution network of the ammunition, including those responsible for transporting, receiving, or possessing it. He further noted that the identities of the longboat crew and the specific means of transport are still under investigation.

“This evidence will be thoroughly examined alongside investigators to determine the origin, distribution routes, and the parties involved in the procurement, transport, and possession of this ammunition,” he said.
