Custom Cars and Motorcycles Still Rarely Undergo Type Testing
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Roadworthiness and Motor Vehicle Certification Testing Agency (BPLJSKB) is tasked with testing motor vehicles that will circulate in Indonesia. So far, BPLJSKB has been more known as an institution that conducts type testing for new vehicles before they are marketed. However, BPLJSKB actually also serves testing for vehicles resulting from modifications or customisation so that they remain legal to use on public roads. “If it’s a modification, the workshop also (submits the application). It’s called customisation,” said Bowo, who was met by Kompas.com in Cibitung on Tuesday (5/5/2026). Although the facilities are already available, Bowo said that testing of customised vehicles is still relatively rare. Nevertheless, the trend of customisation is accommodated as long as it meets the applicable regulations. “It’s rare for those that are modified. But for conversions, it’s already frequent. Conversions are already many,” he said. Bowo added that the government has regulated the legality of vehicle customisation through Minister of Transportation Regulation No. 45 of 2023. “There are provisions, there are minimums. So if there are four changes,” he explained. In addition, the changes made must not interfere with safety aspects and must still meet the technical standards for roadworthy vehicles. After the customisation process is completed, the vehicle is required to undergo type testing at BPLJSKB. This stage is important because it will produce official documents as the vehicle’s legality.
