Current Condition of the Kramat Jati Fire Site Where Firefighter Perished
The Jakarta Provincial Government has revealed the current condition of the waste pile fire on Jalan Penggilingan Baru, Dukuh Village, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. The Head of the Jakarta Communications, Information, and Informatics Office, Marulina Dewi, stated that firefighters are currently managing embers that remain active beneath the waste piles.
“The current focus of the handling is the fire located beneath the waste piles. While the surface may be wet, there is still significant smoke, indicating the potential for fire to spread to depths of approximately one to two metres,” Marulina said in a written statement on Sunday (2/8/2026).
Marulina revealed that firefighters have opened several points in the waste piles to allow water to reach the lower layers. The Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) has also begun transporting waste from areas declared safe. Furthermore, Marulina noted that the fire site is not an official landfill, but rather a location frequently used for illegal dumping, leading to the accumulation of waste.
“In line with post-fire management, the Jakarta Environmental Agency will carry out waste collection gradually. The first stage will take place in safe, unaffected areas. Subsequently, collection will continue in the fire-affected area once it has been declared safe by the Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat),” she said.
Marulina urged the public not to dispose of waste at this location or on land not designated for such purposes. She emphasised that the Jakarta Provincial Government is encouraging residents to sort their waste. “In accordance with Governor’s Instruction Number 5 of 2026, the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to promote changes in waste management patterns through the ‘sort, collect, process, and utilise’ movement, and has prepared various waste processing facilities, including TPS 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), so that only residual waste is sent to the Bantargebang landfill,” she added.
Marulina stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government will tighten supervision to prevent repeated illegal dumping. Investigators from the Jakarta Environmental Agency will also conduct an inquiry and investigation at the site. “Starting Monday, Civil Servant Investigators (PPNS) from the Environmental Agency will conduct an investigation at the fire site. Those found to be engaging in illegal dumping will face strict sanctions,” she added.
Previously, the Head of the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service, Bayu Meghantara, stated that the fire occurred on Saturday (1/8) at approximately 07:02 WIB. The Fire Department deployed ten fire engines and 50 personnel to the scene. “Extinguishing operations began at 07:11 WIB. The fire was successfully localised by 11:35 WIB. Subsequently, the cooling process began at 13:15 WIB and is still ongoing to dismantle flammable materials,” Bayu explained in a written statement on Sunday (2/8).
A firefighter named Andriyono passed away during the fire after complaining of illness while on duty. Andriyono was the Squad Leader of the Cepu Group, Cipayung Sector. “The Jakarta Provincial Fire and Rescue Service expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of the Squad Leader of the Cepu Group, Cipayung Sector, Mr Andriyono,” said Bayu.
