Current Condition of Andrie Yunus: RSCM Explanation
RSUP Nasional Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM) is providing intensive treatment to Andrie Yunus, victim of caustic soda burns to his face and several body areas. According to RSCM’s Legal and Public Relations Manager Yoga Nara, the patient arrived at the Emergency Department (ED) on Friday, 13 March in the early hours with chemical burns in multiple areas.
“The patient presented with complaints of burns to the face, neck, chest, back, and both arms, accompanied by visual disturbance in the right eye,” he stated on Tuesday.
Upon arrival at the ED, the medical team immediately performed initial examination and stabilised the patient’s condition. Examination results revealed exposure to acidic chemical substances in the wound areas. As initial treatment, the medical team performed irrigation and wound washing to reduce the chemical effects and normalise tissue condition.
Yoga explained that initial diagnosis indicated the patient suffered approximately 24 percent burns, which was later corrected to approximately 20 percent of body surface area following further evaluation by the attending physician. The burns primarily affected the face (right side), right eye, both hands, and chest.
Additionally, the patient experienced severe chemical trauma to the right eye with grade three (acute phase) severity, causing a sharp decline in vision and damage to the corneal surface.
To address this condition, the patient underwent debridement of damaged tissue on the right eye and amniotic membrane transplantation to protect the ocular surface and support the healing process.
Currently, the patient is being treated in the High Care Unit (HCU) for burns with multidisciplinary team management involving specialist ophthalmologists, reconstructive plastic surgeons, and emergency medicine personnel. Therapy provided includes wound care, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, vitamins, and treatment to maintain intraocular pressure.
“Overall, the patient’s condition is stable and not life-threatening,” said Yoga.
He added that medical treatment will continue in stages, including possible tissue reconstruction procedures and further interventions to restore the patient’s vision function. RSCM affirms its commitment to providing comprehensive medical services for patients with complex trauma cases.
