Cup players dominate selection

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Davis and Federation cup players dominated the first day of national selection at the Senayan tennis complex yesterday.

Indonesia's top men's player, Andrian Raturandang, beat junior Marco Sitepu 6-1, 6-2, in a group B match.

Surya Wijaya was in second place after beating Edo Bawono 6-2, 6-1.

Suwandi beat Mulyadi 6-1, 6-1 to lead group C. Another match between Samsudin Pare and Djanuar Radjab will be continued today after a 1-1 tie. The match was taking too long. Samsudin won the first set 5-7 while Djanuar took the second set 6-4.

Old hand Sulistyo Wibowo was too strong for newcomer Yusmawan Fahmi and won 6-4, 6-4 in group D. Former Davis Cup player Sebastian da Costa struggled to beat Stanley Sanger 6-2, 5-7, 6- 2.

Veteran Bonit Wiryawan thrashed Harijadi Lesmana 6-0, 6-1 to lead group A. Former Davis Cup player Donny Susetyo worked hard to overcome Suhendar Dinata 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3).

In the women's matches, Federation Cup player Eny Sulistyowati had a tougher time than expected to beat Irawati M Iskandar 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-2 in group D. Newcomer Asri Nursanti Ebo beat Marieke Gunawan 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Indonesia's second best player Wynne Prakusya, who is dubbed the future Yayuk Basuki, won easily against Agustine Limanto 6-2, 6-2 in group B. Frederika Girsang overcame Zenaeda Sumedi 6-3, 6- 2 to grab second place.

Mimma Chernovita, another Federation Cup player, had no trouble beating Nuraeni Batubara 6-1, 6-0 in group C. Liza Andriyani was in second place after beating Lianasari Batubara 6- 1 6-1.

Wukirasih Sawondari beat Evi Murtiningsih 6-1, 6-1 to lead group A. Mudarwati beat Vinca Rampen 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 for second place.

Eight men and eight women will be chosen to represent Indonesia in international events like the Davis and Federation cups. (yan)
