Culture Ministry Urges Pariaman and West Sumatra to Nominate Tabuik for UNESCO Heritage Status

The Ministry of Culture has requested the Pariaman City Government and the West Sumatra Provincial Government to prepare a proposal for the Tabuik tradition to be recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage through the preparation of academic studies and comprehensive supporting documentation.

“The registration is indeed processed through the Ministry of Culture, but we must undertake extensive research and studies,” stated the Deputy Minister of Culture, Giring Ganesha, while attending the peak of the Pesona Budability Tabuik Piaman 2026 in Pariaman on Sunday.

He noted that while the focus is on Tabuik, there is anticipation regarding other cultural recognitions, and he requested prayers from the Indonesian people for the success of such cultural endeavours.

He highlighted the unique aspects of Tabuik, specifically its design, which features various ornaments and wings, as well as the intricate process of its creation and the ritual of carrying it before finally releasing it into the sea.

According to the Deputy Minister, these activities must be preserved, not only to safeguard the nation’s cultural heritage but also because they have a significant impact on the local community’s economy.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Pariaman, Yota Balad, expressed his hope that the annual cultural event in the region would be included in the UNESCO list.

“We are ready to prepare all the necessary requirements to ensure Tabuik enters UNESCO,” he said.

He added that this year’s Tabuik celebration was the most festive compared to previous years, attracting many tourists and featuring a performance by the Deputy Minister and the popular band Nidji.
