Cuba hit by nationwide blackout again

Cuba has once again experienced a total nationwide power outage, just days after a similar blackout, the state electricity company Union Electrica de Cuba (UNE) said in a statement. “Total disconnection of the national electricity grid,” UNE said in a post on platform X. The previous blackout occurred on 6 July, when the Ministry of Energy and Mines said Cuba suffered a total power outage after the island’s energy grid collapsed. This latest nationwide blackout is the fourth to occur in 2026. Energy production and distribution in the Caribbean island nation remain in an unstable condition. In late January, the United States imposed an oil embargo on Cuba and threatened to levy tariffs on imports from countries supplying oil to Cuba. The Cuban government has stated that the US is using the energy embargo to strangle the country’s economy and worsen the living conditions of its citizens.
