Crushing Sectoral Egos, Purbaya Assures Finance Ministry Is Now 'Agile'

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has asserted that he has resolved issues of sectoral ego within the Ministry of Finance. He confirmed that sectoral ego within the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) has continued to diminish in line with organisational transformation efforts over the past few years. Purbaya also assured that Kemenkeu has now become a more agile and adaptive organisation compared to before, because sectoral egos have been dealt with. “Is the Ministry of Finance agile? Maybe if you asked two years ago, no. Now I think it is agile, although there are silos, we reduce silos as much as possible. So it is not like it used to be,” said Purbaya after a working meeting with Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives in Jakarta, quoted on Tuesday (17/6/2026). He acknowledged that previously there were various silos or divisions. Purbaya confirmed this is no longer the case. He has encouraged all directorates within the Ministry of Finance to work together. For example, he cited that if there was a case or employee coaching from the Directorate General of Budget to the Directorate General of Taxes, execution was very difficult. This was because each directorate worked independently. “There was a case of employee transfer from the Directorate General of Budget to Taxes, it was very difficult, because each had their own silos. Even though it is mostly the same people,” he said. Purbaya assessed that this could happen because there are so many civil servants within the Ministry of Finance. Therefore, he has strived to break down the barriers between directorates. He stressed that there must be no more sectoral ego at the directorate general level that could hinder the organisation’s work. “So that others can be more synergistic in understanding, the Ministry of Finance is essentially one. There is no need for ego within one directorate general, we will sort it out,” he asserted.
