What? Gus Dur has apologized to the Indonesian Communist Party
(PKI)? You must be wrong! Have you heard correctly? So, in what
capacity has Gus Dur made the apology? As a private person or as
the President and leader of the Indonesian people?

Gus! Have you forgotten the terrors and cruelty practiced by
the PKI?

Gus, have you not undergone the bitterness and revenge of the
Indonesian people who have been victimized by the traitor of the
nation, the PKI?

Gus, personally I cannot let a national leader so easily
forgive the PKI because in 1965 my family and I were victims of
the atrocity and cruelty of the PKI.

At that time I was abducted in order to weaken the spirit of
my parents, who strongly opposed the PKI. Our family was a
continuous target of PKI terror so that my mother became severely
depressed and had to be treated in a mental hospital for many
months.

Gus, I cannot prevent you from apologizing to the PKI in your
personal capacity because you are an ulema and as one it is
demanded of you to be forgiving. However, I am strongly opposed
to you, as the President, apologizing to the PKI. Don't forget
that you are now the leader of the Indonesian people and not just
a commoner serving as the leader of NU.

Gus, if you do not retract your statement, the PKI will demand
the revocation of Stipulation of the Provisional People's
Consultative Assembly (MPRS) banning and disbanding the PkI. They
will later set up a neo-PKI with a new face and name. In this
case, we, the entire Indonesian people, will demand your
accountability in this respect.

Gus, if you are insistent on this stance, either as a private
person or a national leader, you must extend your apology not
only to the PKI but also to the Dutch people and the Japanese
because the Indonesian people stood against them and wrested
their independence. They have also daringly defended their
independence.
