Crowds of Pilgrims Bring a Flood of Profits to TPU Semper Flower Vendors During Eid
During the Eid season, seasonal flower vendors have returned to public cemeteries (TPU), including TPU Semper in Cilincing, North Jakarta. Seasonal flower vendors at TPU Semper have seen a surge in customers during the peak of Eid pilgrimages. One vendor, Maimunah (60), said she only sells during Eid each year. “I only sell this during Eid. Usually from the stall here. Every year (selling), it’s been quite a while, probably 10 years,” she told Kompas.com at the location on Monday (23/3/2026). She sells bucket flower arrangements and scattering flowers for grave visits at varying prices, around Rp 35,000 for bucket arrangements and Rp 45,000 for scattering flowers. “As for profits, I don’t know, because I’m just told to do it. Later they’ll settle it, usually Rp 100,000 per day,” she said. She noted that sales are busiest in the early days of Eid when pilgrims crowd the cemetery area. “Last Eid was alhamdulillah busy. Saturday (21/3/2026), it sold out a lot, the busiest time,” she revealed. However, entering H+3 of Eid al-Fitr, trading activity has begun to decline along with the reduced number of pilgrims. “Today is quiet. Last Sunday was also quiet, only sold a little,” she said. She emphasised that they only conduct supervision to ensure vendor activities do not cause disturbances in the cemetery area. “Here, the vendors are seasonal, locals seeking livelihood. We just monitor to avoid any brawls,” she told Kompas.com on Monday. She also mentioned residents who help cover pilgrims’ motorbikes with cardboard without a fixed fee.
