PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI is expanding its digital payment services by introducing the QRIS Cross Border feature in China through the wondr by BNI app. With this feature, BNI customers can make transactions at merchants connected to Alipay and UnionPay simply by scanning QR codes, without needing to exchange cash.

The launch of this initiative was carried out together with Bank Indonesia (BI) and payment service providers, non-bank financial institutions, and banks on 30 April 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen cross-border payment system connectivity. The event was attended by BI Governor Perry Warjiyo, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong, and Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno.

BNI’s Senior Executive Vice President for Network and Sales, Sri Indira, stated that the development of this feature provides transaction convenience for customers while supporting global payment system integration.

“This launch is a concrete step by BNI in supporting an increasingly global digital payment ecosystem. We want to ensure that customers can transact easily anywhere, including in China, while also encouraging increased transactions from foreign tourists in Indonesia,” she said in a written statement quoted on Friday (1/5/2026).

Through this feature, wondr by BNI customers can directly make payments at various merchants in China connected to the local digital payment network. Conversely, tourists from China can also transact at BNI merchants in Indonesia using their payment apps that have been integrated with QRIS.

BNI views this step as an important milestone in strengthening the interconnection of payment systems between Indonesia and China. In addition to increasing cross-border transaction convenience, this feature also has the potential to drive inbound transaction growth, particularly from Chinese tourists who are one of the main contributors to the national tourism sector.

From an industry perspective, the strengthening of the digital payment ecosystem continues to show positive trends. Bank Indonesia recorded a digital payment transaction volume of 14.39 billion transactions in the first quarter of 2026, growing 33.76% year-on-year, in line with increasing digital acceptance in various sectors.

Looking ahead, BNI plans to expand the reach of QRIS Cross Border to other countries as part of its strategy to strengthen global digital services. This step is expected not only to enhance customer transaction comfort but also to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the international digital economy ecosystem.
