Cross-Border QRIS Now Live Between Indonesia and South Korea

Jakarta. Bank Indonesia (BI) on Wednesday officially launched cross-border Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) payments with South Korea, marking a major step to deepen regional payment connectivity and unlock new opportunities for tourism and small businesses.

The initiative links the two countries’ payment ecosystems, enabling faster, more seamless transactions for travelers and merchants while strengthening Indonesia’s position in the regional digital economy.

BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta said the collaboration expands market access for domestic businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to reach a broader international customer base.

“With this, Indonesia continues to strengthen its role in building cross-border payment connectivity that is efficient, inclusive, and aligned with national interests,” Filianingsih said at the launch event in Jakarta.

The cross-border QRIS rollout is part of the Indonesia Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) 2030, which aims not only to accelerate digitalization but also to reinforce economic sovereignty, efficiency, and interoperability in international transactions.

Filianingsih highlighted that QRIS has become the backbone of Indonesia’s retail payment system, driving financial inclusion across all segments of society. Its widespread adoption among consumers and businesses, including MSMEs, has standardized and streamlined digital payment transactions nationwide.

South Korea is the latest partner to join Indonesia’s QRIS cross-border network, following Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. Bank Indonesia data shows strong traction, with inbound transactions reaching 5.9 million and outbound transactions totaling 1.7 million.

“With South Korea joining as a new partner, it further strengthens payment connectivity that supports digital economic and financial integration in the ASEAN Plus Three region. Hopefully, by next month, we can also connect with China,” she said.

Looking ahead, Bank Indonesia will focus on expanding QRIS acceptance at key locations such as international airports, tourist destinations, and shopping centers. The central bank is also calling on stakeholders to intensify joint campaigns to raise awareness among international visitors.

“We also encourage improving public digital literacy so cross-border QRIS can be used optimally, safely, and responsibly,” Filianingsih added.

Beyond its technical implementation, the initiative reflects a broader strategic partnership aimed at building a more integrated and globally relevant digital economy.
