Crocodile threatens Kutai villagers

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: A giant yellow crocodile is terrorizing villagers in Sanga Sanga, Kutai regency.

The three-meter-long, 50-centimeter-wide beast mauled a 12- year-old girl last week, who was washing dishes in a river at about 6:30 p.m.

Residents said it was the first time a crocodile had been seen in their village, Antara reported.

The girl survived the attack because her mother arrived in time to drag her out of the crocodile's jaws. The girl escaped with severe thigh and arm injuries.

Eyewitnesses said the crocodile had charged the two furiously before returning to the river.

The crocodile is believed to have devoured many pets and goats in the village. Locals have unsuccessfully tried to bait and capture the crocodile with a chicken. (pan)
