Criminal Corruption Case Against Alex Noerdin Closed

The criminal case against Alex Noerdin, a former Governor of South Sumatra, has been closed following his death.

The Head of the Legal Information Center of the Attorney General’s Office, Anang Supriatna, explained that the case against the suspect or defendant is automatically dropped if the person dies.

“If he dies, the criminal case against him is automatically closed by law,” said Anang to reporters on Wednesday (February 25).

Although the case against Alex has been stopped, Anang ensured that the trial process for the alleged corruption case regarding the revitalization of the Cinde Market at the Corruption Court of the Class IA PN Palembang will continue for the other defendants. This includes tracing state losses.

“Meanwhile, the others will continue in the trial. If there are losses enjoyed by the person concerned, it will be submitted to the Asset Recovery Division (JPN) to file a civil lawsuit,” he explained.

He also mentioned that Alex’s testimony, which has been recorded in the minutes of the examination (BAP), can still be used in the trial of other defendants, as long as permission is obtained from the panel of judges.

“As a witness, with the permission of the panel of judges, his testimony in the BAP can be read,” he said.

Meanwhile, the family confirmed that Alex died at the age of 76 after undergoing treatment at one of the hospitals in Jakarta.

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun, Mr. Alex Noerdin has passed away at 13:30 WIB at Siloam Hospital, Jakarta,” said the family spokesperson for Alex Noerdin, Okta Alfarisi.

Alex Noerdin was born in Palembang on September 9, 1950, as the third son of seven siblings from the couple H Muhammad Noerdin Pandji and Hj Siti Fatimah.

Quoting from various sources, he obtained a bachelor’s degree at Trisakti University in 1980 and the Indonesian Catholic University of Atma Jaya in 1981, and attended various international training courses such as the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) Nagoya in 1985 and the Program of the United Housing Urbanization Harvard University in 1992.

Alex then began his bureaucratic career as a civil servant (PNS) at the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) of South Sumatra and briefly served as the Head of the Tourism Office of the City of Palembang.

Then, his political career began when he joined a political party and participated in regional elections until he was elected as Regent of Musi Banyuasin (Muba) in 2002.

During his second term as Regent (2007-2012), he became more widely known, and then he participated in the South Sumatra Governor Election in 2008.

On June 14, 2008, during his second term as Regent of Muba, he resigned in connection with his candidacy as Governor of South Sumatra.

He then won and served as Governor of South Sumatra for two terms (2008-2013) and (2013-2018).

After being elected in the 2013 Regional Elections, Alex Noerdin, who was paired with Ishak Mekki, built sports infrastructure because Palembang was the host of the 2011 SEA Games and the 2018 Asian Games.

During his tenure, Alex was active in organizations such as the Chairman of the South Sumatra Golkar DPD (2004-2009) and various national sports organizations.

He also ran for Governor of DKI Jakarta in 2012, paired with Nono Sampono, but lost.

After serving as governor, he was elected as a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) RI (2019-2024).

At the end of his life, Alex Noerdin was involved in a corruption case.

Previously, the South Sumatra Prosecutor’s Office named four suspects in the alleged corruption case regarding the revitalization of the Cinde Market in Palembang. One of the four suspects was Alex Noerdin, who had undergone the investigation process since 2023.

He then underwent trial as a defendant at the Palembang PN. Quoting from detik.com, earlier this week, the defendant Alex was supposed to attend a hearing as a witness in the Cinde Market case at the PN Palembang, Monday (February 23).

However, he could not attend because he was ill and had been rushed to Siloam Palembang Hospital and then referred to Jakarta.

In the hearing, Alex’s lawyer, Titis Rachmawati, explained to the panel of judges that his client was currently in critical condition.

According to Titis, Alex Noerdin has been in the hospital since Friday (February 20) afternoon because his condition was quite serious.

Hearing this, the panel of judges of the Corruption Court of Class 1 A Palembang, chaired by Fauzi Isra, said that the hearing of the alleged corruption case regarding the revitalization of the Cinde market was postponed for two weeks.
