Creative Economy Minister: Weaving Must Be Showcased to Boost Its Economic Value
Creative Economy Minister and Head of the Creative Economy Agency, Teuku Riefky Harsya, believes that weaving, which has long existed and been designed with great creativity by designers, needs to be supported and must be showcased so that its economic value can grow.
“When its economic value grows, of course we all hope, including the artisans, will become more prosperous,” said Creative Economy Minister Riefky in an official statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
This was conveyed by Creative Economy Minister Riefky Harsya at the Weaving Archipelago event, part of the Glorify Indonesia 2026 series, at Senayan City, Jakarta, on Wednesday (12/8). The event presented the richness of Nusantara weaving through a contemporary approach to fashion, design, and lifestyle.
The Creative Economy Minister reviewed a number of installations that were part of Weaving Archipelago. These various installations showcased the process and richness of Nusantara weaving while bringing the works of artisans closer to the public in public spaces.
The Ministry of Creative Economy also views this collaboration as part of efforts to bring culture-based works into the creative economy ecosystem through strengthening talent, design development, intellectual property protection, and expanding market access.
“What we are doing here is certainly not only preserving culture, but also how to provide economic value. Its IP and its design must also be certified immediately with the Ministry of Law so that it is not pirated, so that its originality, its economic value, and its protection are all carried out together,” said Riefky.
Riefky hopes that Weaving Archipelago can develop beyond its function as an exhibition by opening a meeting space for artisans, designers, business actors, the public, and various partners.
“I hope Weaving Archipelago will not only become an exhibition, but also become a space for new collaborations to be born, open business opportunities, strengthen local brands, and bring Indonesian weaving to the world stage,” he said.
This activity is part of the celebration of Senayan City’s 20th anniversary while presenting Nusantara weaving in public spaces through the Tenun Display, CTI Journey, traditional loom installations, live weaving demonstrations, cultural performances, talk shows, workshops, and styling sessions.
Secretary General of Cita Tenun Indonesia, Intan Fauzi, said that the Weaving Archipelago event is part of CTI’s long journey in introducing Indonesian weaving through collaborative and marketing spaces.
“Amid the onslaught of international brands, thank God one of Indonesia’s prides, weaving, has been placed on the ground floor. This is a source of pride for us,” said Intan Fauzi.
