In the midst of male-dominated labour in the mining industry, PT Merdeka Copper Gold Tbk (MDKA) continues to promote the creation of an inclusive and equitable work environment for women. This commitment is realised through workforce management that supports the role of female employees in various operational lines. Currently, MDKA has 1,081 female employees, or about 11.6 percent of the total workforce across all business entities. Of that number, around 15 percent hold managerial positions. As an empowerment effort, MDKA has introduced the Female Green Operator programme to train local women to operate heavy equipment such as Articulated Dump Trucks (ADT). MDKA also develops the Mining Apprentice Programme (MAP) in Wetar. This programme, which initially focused on empowering women around the mine, is now expanding to various regions in Maluku. To date, MAP has produced 120 female operators involved in Wetar Copper Mine operations. Therefore, MDKA continues to strive to create an inclusive, safe, and fair work environment, especially for female employees. “We provide special facilities for female employees at the site, such as dormitories/camps, sports rooms, and others, so they feel safe and comfortable in their activities,” said Titien in a press release received by Kompas.com on Wednesday (25/3/2026). She emphasised that commitment to diversity and inclusion forms the main foundation of the company, realised through various policies and work guidelines. In addition, she said, MDKA also provides a special reporting channel to handle potential violations or discrimination against female employees, in collaboration with an independent third party. According to Titien, the diversity and inclusion ecosystem that has been built at MDKA needs to be continuously strengthened so that female employees can work safely and remain productive. One of them is health discussions to raise awareness of breast cancer. MDKA also collaborates with the nonprofit organisation Lovepink to provide ultrasonography (USG) screening services for female employees. In addition, the company holds internal activities such as fashion shows to provide space for expression for employees. This series of activities represents MDKA’s efforts in building an inclusive and empowering work environment, while encouraging women to continue developing in the mining industry.
