CPO Imports to European Union Increase
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Crude Palm Oil (CPO) imports from Indonesia and Malaysia to the European Union (EU) increased last year. At the same time however, the EU is discussing a proposal accusing Indonesia of deforestation.
Executive Director of Indonesian Greenomics, Elfian Effendi, said this occurred between September and October 2008.
He said the data came from the CPO export transaction reports to the EU issued by the Industry Department.
Total revenues between January and August 2008 reached US$851.44 million while between September and October 2008 they reached US$291.6 million.
Elfian said the jump in demand was caused by the EU regulation obligating the 27 European Union countries to use 10 percent biofuel by 2020.
He considered the proposal corners the CPO producers.
“They issue a policy but force Indonesia to export CPO to them,” said Elfian.
