Couples Caned in Aceh for Intimate Acts During TikTok Livestream

A number of individuals convicted of violating Islamic law by engaging in intimate acts between unmarried men and women, known as ikhtilath, via social media were caned at Taman Bustanussalatin in Banda Aceh, Aceh, on Thursday. The Sharia Court in Banda Aceh sentenced the offenders to between 10 and 30 lashes, including a couple caught kissing during a live broadcast on the TikTok platform. Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that implements Sharia law and categorises same-sex relations and sexual relations outside of marriage as criminal offences.
