Couple tried for heroin

TANGERANG: An unmarried couple went on trial in the Tangerang
District Court on Tuesday for being in possession of one gram of
putaw (low grade heroin).

Prosecutor Iwa Pria Wicaksana told the court that Hesti Idrus,
alias Ata, 27, a resident of Jl. Kramat Baru No. 23, Gandaria
Selatan, Kebayoran district, South Jakarta, and Emil Iskandar,
37, a resident of Jl. Wijaya Kusuma II/198, Komplek Mabad,
Rempoa, Ciputat, Tangerang, were apprehended by Ciputat Police
last June.

"They were caught red-handed wrapping the heroin in a small
package ready for sale. The police raided their rented house in
the Pasar Gintung area of Ciputat following a report by local
people," the prosecutor said.

The police recovered the drug and four syringes from the
defendants.

The defendants had violated Article 78 of Law No. 22/1977 on
illegal drugs, which carries a maximum punishment of life
imprisonment, the prosecutor said.

Presiding Judge Suhartoyo adjourned the trial until
next Tuesday to hear testimony from witnesses. --JP
