Country Profile: The Philippines -- June 12

Message from Charge d'Affaires a.i., Catalino R. Dilem, Jr.

I would like to extend my warmest greetings to all Filipinos in the Republic of Indonesia on the occasion of the 106th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.

As we reaffirm our commitment and loyalty to flag and country, today's celebration allows us to reflect on the true meaning of our hard-earned independence -- and of the civic duties and responsibilities of each and every Filipino citizen in building a stronger nation.

By fulfilling our obligations as Filipino citizens and doing our share in nation-building, we make ourselves worthy of the freedom bequeathed to us and our children by our forebears.

The theme for Kalayaan 2004 is Galing ng Pilipino sa Matatag na Republika, which captures our shared belief that our nation's greatest asset is its people. It is significant to note in this regard that Filipinos in Indonesia have made important strides in their professional careers through hard work and sheer talent.

By continuing to commit yourselves to personal and professional excellence, and by building bridges of friendship and understanding between our culture and those of others, you embody the best of what our nation can offer.

May this occasion encourage all of us to work together -- as one people and one nation, with one vision for our country.
