The Prosecutor’s Office destroyed fourteen watches belonging to the convicted person in the ASABRI corruption case, Jimmy Sutopo. The destruction was carried out after expert analysis concluded the watches were not identical to the originals, i.e., counterfeit or ‘KW’ goods. The destruction occurred at the Badan Pemulihan Aset (Asset Recovery Agency) Fair 2026, on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, with prosecutors carrying out the destruction on-site.

The watches confirmed as counterfeit had their straps removed first with pliers. Thereafter, the watch fragments were placed in clear plastic bags and subsequently crushed with a hammer into pieces.

The Deputy Attorney General for Civil and State Administration (Jamdatun), Narendra Jatna, said the counterfeit goods do hold economic value. Yet, he noted, the state should not profit from counterfeit goods that infringe the law. ‘For counterfeits, there are international standards. The goods sold must correspond to the original. This relates to copyrights, patents, and so on,’ Narendra said.

He noted that the state cannot circulate goods that violate Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) as this would harm the owners of patents and brands. The Prosecutors’ Office ultimately decided to destroy the counterfeit items.

Head of the Legal Information Centre (Kapuspenkum) of the Attorney General’s Office, Anang Supriatna, said the counterfeit status of the fourteen watches had undergone a lengthy validation process. He said Jimmy Sutopo had also admitted in court that the items were counterfeit, and this was reflected in the indictment and verdict.

He added there were no seized items that had been misappropriated. All seized items were stored properly.

Anang also noted that the value of the fourteen counterfeit watches was far lower than the genuine products. Genuine watches of that brand can be worth billions of rupiah, whereas the counterfeits were valued at tens of millions of rupiah. ‘The price is respectable but still far from the genuine price. The genuine price can run into billions for a single watch. For these counterfeit ones, it’s around Rp 15 million, roughly,’ he said.
