Councillors living above incomes: NGO

KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The Alliance of Southeast Sulawesi People, a local non-governmental organization (NGO), have demanded the State Officials' Wealth Audit Commission investigate alleged corruption involving local councillors.

It said the alleged graft was evidenced by the lavish lifestyles of the councillors, who lived in excess of what their official salaries, which ranged from Rp 6 million (US$666.7) to Rp 8 million (US$888.8), could pay for.

"Having been in office for two years, their lifestyles and wealth have changed drastically," NGO coordinator Fajar Meronda said.

Many of the councillors had no houses or cars before they entered the legislative council. They now possessed cars and houses worth hundreds of millions of rupiah, Fajar said.

The NGO demanded the commission investigate where the money was sourced. -- Antara
