Councillors jailed for drug use

TANGERANG: The Tangerang District Court sentenced on Monday two former Tangerang regency councillors, to prison for the possession and use of ecstasy.

Muhdiar and Toha Mujitaba, from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), were sentenced to six months and four months in jail, respectively.

The prosecutor had sought 10-month jail terms for the two former councillors, and six-month jail terms for five other defendants arrested for drugs at a hotel in June.

"As councillors, they should set a good example for society," presiding judge Suprapto said.

Muhdiar was at the hotel with Toha, his wife, PDI-P member Arsan and three women to celebrate his 55th birthday. -- JP
