Councillors detained for alleged graft

LUWUK, Central Sulawesi: Prosecutors at Luwuk, the capital of Banggai regency here, have arrested three councillors for their alleged roles in an Rp 2.2 billion (US$234,042) corruption case.

Martono, the chief of Luwuk Prosecutor's Office, confirmed on Friday that they had been detained for questioning since Thursday.

Aside the arrest, he said that the prosecutors would also immediately investigate whether 37 other councillors were also involved in the embezzlement of Rp 2.2 billion from the Banggai regency budget last year. -- JP
