Councillors buy new cars
Councillors buy new cars
From Pikiran Rakyat
Referring to a report on what happened in West Java Council
in Pikiran Rakyat of Jan. 16, 2001, I would like to express my
concern. As a West Javanese, I am very concerned about the
reported desire of the council to buy new cars for all
councillors despite the fact that they know the local people have
been suffering. I do not think it is wise of them to think about
let alone plan to buy new office cars for themselves when they
have not proven they have made significant changes for the
welfare of the community. Under the circumstances I do not think
they deserve to be issued such luxury cars.
In my opinion they should ask themselves what they have done
for the people who have elected them to speak and act on their
behalf before thinking of buying new cars. They should realize
that they've been elected to straighten out current disorganized
towns in West Java and to eliminate people's poverty and
suffering. They've been elected to sacrifice if needed for their
people and region, like the two members of Siliwangi military
personnel who were reported by Pikiran Rakyat to have sacrificed
their lives while assigned to Aceh recently. The Councillors
should realize that they have been elected not to buy new cars
for themselves.
