Councillor goes on trial

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: A Kupang municipality councillor went on trial on Thursday for allegedly using a fake diploma when he was running for election last year.

During the first trial session on Thursday, prosecutor Carlos de Fatima accused defendant Edy Husein of diploma forgery that may lead to a five-year prison sentence if convicted.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant submitted a fake senior high school diploma when he was registering for his council candidacy, but it was discovered a few months later.

The defendant is a councillor with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). -- JP
