Councillor blames police

JAKARTA (JP): Tangerang Council blamed the police for the town's rampant gambling activities.

"We are disappointed with the police, who don't seem to care about gambling here," head of the Council, H. Gian Sugiarsono told reporters on Wednesday.

He was referring to the pakong lottery.

He said that bankers sell coupons openly in various places as the police make no effort to take action against them. The coupons are even available at a site just a few meters from Tangerang Police Headquarters, Antara reported.

The lottery is drawn three times a week. For one round, a banker can make up to Rp 900 million.

Tangerang Mayor Moch. Thamrin said that he always called upon the police to take action against the sale of the coupons.

He also appealed to the public to report to the police gambling activities in their neighborhood. (sim)
