Council ponders 'syariah'

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: The provincial legislative council is currently preparing a bylaw to apply syariah (Islamic law) in South Kalimantan, but only in phases, speaker Munsyah Add said on Monday.

Munsyah met with members of the local chapter of the Indonesian Muslim Students Action Front (KAMMI) who pointed out that one of the recommendations of the Banjarmasin People's Congress was to introduce Islamic law in the province.

Munsyah said the council had already introduced a number of regulations based on syariah. He cited the regulation against the sale of alcoholic drinks, which, he noted, had been violated by Muslims. (04)
