Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian MSME Association (AKUMINDO) assesses that cost and low market pressure remain obstacles faced by some micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) operators in obtaining halal certification. AKUMINDO Secretary General Edy Misero said many small business owners still weigh the cost of certification against the long-term benefits. According to him, this situation is commonly found among micro-enterprises that already have regular customers and feel their business continues to run even without halal certification. He cited the example of a fried rice vendor who has been trading for decades and still retains customers despite the product not yet holding a halal certificate. Edy noted that some MSME operators also do not yet feel direct demand from consumers to possess halal certification, so the motivation to obtain the certificate remains relatively low. Nevertheless, Edy stressed that halal certification still offers benefits for business development as it can increase consumer trust while opening up wider market opportunities. He said products that have obtained halal certification have the potential to be more easily accepted by the market, including for export needs to several countries. “Socialise the importance of halal certification from time to time. Provide opportunities and space so that MSME operators can obtain certification for free or at an affordable cost,” said Edy. He hopes that more MSME operators will understand the benefits of halal certification so they can enhance their product competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
