Corruption suspicions

The detention of General Elections Commission (KPU) member Mulyana W. Kusumah for allegedly bribing a Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) official is currently still in the initial investigative phase.

Accusations of corruption at the KPU are still unclear. What is coming to the fore is the suspicion that the alleged bribery was intended to conceal "something". The BPK's audit of the KPU has not been completed, and thus if the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) insists on immediately pursuing the case then their investigation would be dependent on Mulyana's testimony.

The case seems a bit dramatic. In fact there is a sense that it is being dramatized. Many are surprised that it involves an individual known for his commitment to truth and justice.

Hence there is a growing belief that the priority should not be to arrest Mulyana, but rather a full investigation into the KPU.

There are those who claim that as a result of this case the banner of corruption eradication is flying high. Those people are mistaken. A long queue of major cases have been frozen or shelved -- maybe because they are "protected". -- Neraca Economic Daily, Jakarta
