Corruption rife in Indonesia
Corruption rife in Indonesia
From Suara Karya
The statement made by the Minister of Administrative Reform,
Feisal Tamin, after his meeting with Vice President Hamzah Haz,
is related to the result of a survey conducted by Political and
Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC) stating that Indonesia is Asia's
most corrupt country, scoring 9.92.
In my opinion, the corrupt practices have occurred due to the
mental degradation among some officials in all spheres of
government, in departments, ministries, state enterprises and
regional administrations.
Besides weak supervision, the enforcement of the supremacy of
the law is not carried out consistently by their superiors,
including law enforcers. Ironically, these supervisors
themselves, along with their subordinates, also engage in
corruption, collusion and nepotism so that supervision becomes
ineffective.
The only way to eradicate corruption and irregularities in
state funds, which are becoming increasingly more rife, is for
the officials as state executives to really understand that
corruption is a sinful deed which they will have to account for
on Judgment Day.
