Corruption eradication moves ahead
Corruption eradication moves ahead
From Koran Tempo
The Megawati government's serious intention to eliminate
corruption is indicated by the issuance of Presidential Decree
No.59/2004 on the establishment of anticorruption courts.
The introduction of this decree is very appropriate and
strategic to prevent any further waste of public resources, as
long as it has no political motive.
With the authority to follow up the findings of the Corruption
Eradication Commission, the special courts are expected to work
in a fair and nondiscriminatory manner, without getting involved
in the court mafia.
In this way, the stigma attached to Indonesia by foreign legal
observers as a country with the smallest number of courts
convicting corruption suspects can be shaken off.
The new courts will have a tough task ahead in view of the
very high indications of corruption in the country. Yet this is
the opportunity for the nation's best sons and daughters to live
up to the responsibility of punishing corruptors, who have
worsened the crisis in Indonesia.
