The Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections has stated that reports about an inmate at Nusakambangan Prison with the initials IJS carrying out an online scam from inside the prison are untrue.

“I emphasise that the information stating the criminal act was committed inside the Class IIA Ngaseman Nusakambangan Prison is not true,” said Ditjenpas spokesperson Rika Aprianti in her statement in Jakarta on Thursday.

Rika said IJS is a convict in an electronic-based fraud case involving fictitious Antam gold trading, with the case being handled by the East Java Regional Police.

Based on the investigators’ examination, the act was committed when IJS was still an inmate at the Class IIA Narcotics Prison in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, in May 2026.

She explained that IJS was transferred from the Class II Narcotics Prison in Pematang Siantar to Nusakambangan Prison on 6 June 2026 because he was indicated to have violated prison regulations by possessing a mobile phone and was suspected of involvement in fraud.

“IJS has also been sanctioned for his violation and has been placed in registration F (violation registry),” she revealed.

She said that as a result of the violation, IJS has lost his conditional rights such as remission, parole, and other conditional rights in accordance with applicable regulations.

Regarding this criminal matter, Rika emphasised that Ditjenpas fully supports the law enforcement process carried out by the National Police and is committed to fully supporting the investigation process.

She stressed that the corrections system applies a zero-tolerance principle towards any misuse of communication facilities inside prisons and detention centres.

Any inmate proven to have committed a criminal act will be processed in accordance with applicable legal provisions.

“We reiterate that IJS’s transfer to Nusakambangan was precisely part of the Directorate General of Corrections’ swift action in mitigating security risks against inmates who commit serious violations,” she said.

Rika also conveyed the fact that IJS’s examination conducted at Nusakambangan should not be interpreted as if the criminal act occurred at Nusakambangan. This is because IJS had been transferred beforehand for security reasons.

The case currently being handled by investigators relates to his actions while he was still at the Pematang Siantar Narcotics Prison.

Ditjenpas assures that to this day Nusakambangan is a sterile and clean area for the implementation of rehabilitation programmes based on risk levels derived from assessments and intelligence observations, ranging from super maximum security, maximum security, medium security, and minimum security, and there is a community guidance centre that provides assistance and mentoring.

“Nusakambangan is an area that represents the face of a complete corrections system implementation based on the Corrections Law, which runs personality and independence development programmes for inmates,” said Rika.
