Coordinating Ministry for Politics and Security Claims Papua Situation Generally Safe and Conducive
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Coordinating Ministry for Politics and Security (Kemenko Polkam) states that the situation in Papua is generally monitored as safe and conducive. The Head of the Public Relations, Data, and Information Bureau of Kemenko Polkam, Brigadier General TNI Honi Havana, said that his agency has been intensively monitoring the situation in Papua over the past few days. “Kemenko Polkam continuously and intensively monitors the situation in Papua, which up to today is generally relatively safe and conducive,” Honi told Kompas.com on Monday (27/4/2026). “Efforts to maintain stability are continuously pursued by the TNI, Polri, and other government elements, including the local government,” he said. So far, a number of security personnel in the central region have been working hard to keep the situation conducive. “We hope everything can be controlled and there is no anarchy,” said Honi. This action resulted in unrest. The protesting masses threw stones at the apparatus trying to block their movement. Hundreds of students began gathering since the morning at several points, such as Expo Waena, Perumnas Tiga, Lingkaran Abe, and the Cenderawasih University campus. The masses gathered at Expo Waena and Perumnas Tiga attempted a long march to join the masses at Lingkaran Abepura but were blocked by police apparatus because they disrupted public order. The masses, unwilling to be blocked, resisted by throwing stones at the guarding police apparatus, leading to forced dispersal using water cannons and tear gas. The masses have been dispersed, and currently, apparatus are still guarding several points from Expo to Perumnas Tiga. Meanwhile, the masses at Lingkaran Abepura joined other masses at Cenderawasih University and are still delivering orations. This student demonstration action was carried out simultaneously in the cities of Jayapura, Nabire, and Wamena, Jayawijaya.
