Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Urges PT TPS to Boost Intermodal Connectivity

The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs is encouraging PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS) to enhance the development of international multimodal logistics integration services and transhipment services at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, East Java. “The development of multimodal logistics services is a step to improve the efficiency of the national logistics system and strengthen Indonesia’s position in global trade,” said Yuli Sri Wilanti, Assistant Deputy for State-Owned Enterprise Development in Infrastructure and Logistics at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, in a statement in Surabaya on Sunday. Through a visit to PT TPS, the government aims to evaluate the progress of logistics integration services in order to bolster national logistics competitiveness by improving intermodal connectivity and supply chain efficiency. The evaluation began with a review of railway line connectivity to the port area, including facilities and infrastructure supporting intermodal logistics service integration. This review aims to ensure infrastructure and operational readiness to support multimodal services connecting logistics centres on Java Island with international shipping networks. According to Yuli, this step is crucial because the government is pushing for the realisation of an integrated logistics ecosystem from upstream to downstream. The integration of railway services with ports and international shipping networks, she said, is a concrete solution to increase efficiency, accelerate the flow of goods, and strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the global market. Moreover, TPS is one of the main nodes in the international multimodal logistics service for the Jakarta-Semarang-Surabaya corridor, which integrates rail and sea transport modes. The corridor’s international multimodal logistics service connects Jakarta Gudang, Semarang Tawang, and Surabaya Benteng stations with the main container terminals at Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Emas, and Tanjung Perak ports, supporting more efficient, integrated, and sustainable export and import goods delivery. “TPS’s role is very strategic as a consolidation point for export cargo and distribution of import cargo, connecting industrial areas and distribution centres with international shipping networks,” Yuli said. In addition to multimodal services, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs is also encouraging an increase in the transhipment capacity of Tanjung Perak Port to consolidate domestic and international container flows within the country, improve port infrastructure utilisation, and strengthen Indonesia’s position in global trade and shipping networks. “This will provide added value for the national economy while opening up opportunities for business growth and investment in the logistics sector,” Yuli said. Meanwhile, TPS President Director Wahyu Widodo affirmed his commitment to supporting the development of international multimodal services and transhipment through improved intermodal connectivity. This support, Wahyu said, is realised through the availability of a logistics railway line extending into TPS’s restricted work area, as well as operational efficiency through the rejuvenation of main loading and unloading equipment and electrification. “TPS will continue to strengthen the role of Tanjung Perak Port as a gateway for international trade and a logistics hub for eastern Indonesia,” he stated.
