Coordinating Minister Zulhas Targets 80% of National Waste Problem Resolved by 2029
Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) stated during the ‘Apel Siaga Jaga Jakarta Pilah Sampah’ event at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta on Sunday that the government is targeting the resolution of 70 to 80 percent of national waste problems by 2029. He explained that the waste issue will be addressed through the acceleration of waste processing facility construction, the management of designated areas, and a household waste sorting movement. “The waste problem cannot be solved by the government alone. If the government builds the technology and the community builds the habit of sorting waste from home, we can realise a cleaner, healthier, and more productive Indonesia,” said Zulhas. He called on the entire community to undertake a parallel reform of waste management alongside the government. On this occasion, he appreciated the performance of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, which he considered a true pioneer in waste sorting at the source by involving neighbourhood units (RT), community units (RW), and community groups. “The government is carrying out a major reform in waste management through the construction of Waste-to-Energy facilities. However, that is not enough. This reform must run parallel with the community movement to sort waste from home. Organic waste can become fertiliser, and inorganic waste can be recycled and has economic value,” Zulhas stated. The government, through the Coordinating Ministry for Food, continues to accelerate the construction of Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) facilities in several priority locations, as mandated by Presidential Regulation Number 109 of 2025. In the near future, groundbreaking will be carried out for three PSEL locations, followed by 12 other locations currently being processed by Danantara Indonesia, which will enter the partner selection phase with a target to be operational by 2028.
