Coordinating Minister Yusril Discusses Connected Trial if Civilians Involved in Andrie Yunus Case
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, stated that a connected trial could be conducted in the acid attack case against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. He said this would be done if there are defendants outside the military or civilians involved.
Yusril made this statement while responding to questions about Andrie Yunus’s report to Bareskrim Polri. Meanwhile, the Military Audit Office II-07 Jakarta has transferred the acid attack case file with four TNI soldiers as suspects to the Military Court II-08 Jakarta.
“The report will be studied by Polri investigators to ensure whether there are indeed suspects from the civilian sector involved in the Andrie Yunus case,” Yusril told reporters in the Ancol area, North Jakarta, on Tuesday (16/4/2026).
Yusril said the connectivity mechanism could be implemented if civilian involvement is suspected. He explained that this could apply because some defendants are TNI members and some are civilians.
“If indeed there are civilians involved in the criminal act of the acid attack against the KontraS activist, then like it or not, investigation will be conducted and then proceed to prosecution through connectivity later,” Yusril clarified.
“Because it involves some military members and others are civilians,” he continued.
Yusril said the case has been transferred from the police to TNI POM. This was done because so far, investigators have not found suspects from the civilian element.
“Yesterday, the case was indeed transferred from the police to TNI POM because no suspects from the civilian sector were found. But if tomorrow, based on reports from various parties, the police confirm that there are suspects from the civilian sector, like it or not, this case will become a connectivity case,” he said.
Yusril mentioned that the connectivity mechanism still faces regulatory challenges. He said military perpetrators will still be tried in military courts, while civilians in district courts. This occurs because the Military Court Law has not been revised.
Yusril also said there are issues between three laws regarding TNI soldiers committing general criminal offences, namely the Military Court Law, the TNI Law, and the new Criminal Procedure Code. He said adjustments to the Military Court Law are needed.
“How to harmonise these three laws? In the end, the decision was taken that as long as the Military Court Law has not been amended, if the perpetrator is a TNI soldier, whatever the type of criminal offence, it is returned to the military court. That is why this case was transferred from police investigation to TNI POM,” he said.
“What feels urgent is actually to amend the Military Court Law itself,” he added.
For information, the Military Court II-08 Jakarta has received the transfer of the case file for the acid attack against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. The first trial will be held on 29 April.
Meanwhile, the Tim Advokasi untuk Demokrasi (TAUD) reported the acid attack case against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus to Bareskrim Polri. This report will be registered as a type B report or a report directly filed by the victim’s side.
