Coordinating Minister Speaks Out on Malls Installing High Fences

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago has spoken out about the phenomenon of shopping malls in several regions installing high fences. Djamari stated that the installation of fences has nothing to do with the issue of demonstrations in August 2026.

“There is no connection to the rumours being circulated, none,” Djamari said at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs office on Wednesday (5/8).

According to him, the fences were installed for the individual security interests of each mall. He noted that local governments have already resolved the fence issue.

“It has also been deemed not to meet permit requirements in some places. I don’t want to mention which mall, but the local government has already taken enforcement action,” he said.

In addition to Jakarta, the installation of high fences by a number of malls also occurred in Surabaya, East Java.

Malls under the management of Pakuwon Group in Surabaya, such as Pakuwon Mall, Tunjungan Plaza, Royal Plaza, and Pakuwon City Mall, had also previously installed high fences.

Governor of Jakarta Pramono Anung said the installation of fences was likely carried out due to concerns over the security situation. However, he has asked mall managers to dismantle the fences.

“Regarding the installation of fences, I have also been observing. It may be part of their concerns, but in due course I will definitely ask for the fences to be taken down,” Pramono said in Blok M, South Jakarta, on Friday (31/7).
