Coordinating Minister Says Vape Ban Study Only Targets Narcotics-Laced Products

Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago stated that the government’s plan to ban vapes is specifically targeted at those containing narcotics. “Let it be studied first by the team,” Djamari said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (23/7/2026).

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto had instructed his staff to formulate strict governance for electronic cigarettes. In a speech read by Djamari at the International Anti-Narcotics Day commemoration in Lido, Bogor, Prabowo requested a layered surveillance system for the import and distribution of vapes.

Prabowo emphasised that a total ban on vapes would only be implemented if the devices were proven to be a gateway for drug abuse. “If the results of the joint study show that this commodity poses more risks and continues to be used as an entry point for new types of narcotics, I order you not to hesitate to implement a total ban on vapes in Indonesia,” Prabowo stated. He stressed that public safety is the highest law in Indonesia and that combating narcotics requires synergy from all parties.
