Coordinating Minister says Malang Migrant Center guarantees protection for CPMI and PMI

Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment (Menko PM) Muhaimin Iskandar said the existence of the Malang Migrant Center serves as a platform for collaboration among various parties in enhancing the provision of guaranteed protection of the rights of every Prospective Indonesian Migrant Worker (CPMI) and Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI).

Menko Muhaimin, following the launch of the Malang Migrant Center at the Pendopo Agung of Malang Regency in Malang City, East Java, on Wednesday, said that the protection provided includes ensuring that every CPMI and PMI is free from exploitative activities from pre-placement through to placement in destination countries.

“So that from the time prospective migrant workers are in the placement process until they return after becoming PMI, it can become a comprehensive ecosystem. In this context, the involvement of all parties exists in one complete place named the Malang Migrant Center,” said Muhaimin.

He said that the operation of the Malang Migrant Center, based on cross-sector collaboration involving government, non-governmental organisations, and universities, will create readiness among all parties to anticipate rapid changes in geopolitical aspects and competition for job opportunities abroad.

Cak Imin, as Menko Muhaimin is known, even stated that he is fully prepared to encourage the Malang Migrant Center to expand collaboration with various parties, including destination countries for migrant worker placement.

“Whatever the needs, including advocacy. If the Migrant Center does not have those facilities, we will simply connect them,” he said.

Malang Regency is one of the areas in East Java that is a source region for PMI.

Based on data from the local Manpower Office, in 2024 there were 10,289 residents of Malang Regency with PMI status, then in 2025 there were 8,325 PMI, and up to July 2026 the number of PMI from Malang amounted to around 2,500 people.

This situation ultimately gave rise to the Malang Migrant Center.

In addition, Cak Imin also requested that BPJS Ketenagakerjaan collaborate with private parties both domestically and in placement countries to strengthen protection aspects from the safety perspective for every PMI.

“Workers are essentially free to insure themselves anywhere, but the one mandated by law is BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. So, it is BPJS Ketenagakerjaan’s responsibility to prepare,” he said.
