Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs: Domestic Situation is Stable, Under Our Collective Control
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago has confirmed that conditions throughout Indonesia remain safe and under control amid the issue of August demonstrations circulating on social media.
Djamari conveyed this alongside Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Indonesian Armed Forces Commander General Agus Subiyanto, and State Intelligence Agency Head General (Ret.) Herindra at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs office on Wednesday (5/8).
“The domestic situation is very, very stable and all developments occurring within the country remain under our control, under the control of the Armed Forces Commander, the National Police Chief, and the State Intelligence Agency,” said Djamari.
He said there is currently a great deal of hoax information on social media causing public concern. He therefore urged the public not to be influenced by it.
Djamari also said the current condition of society is not as portrayed on social media. He assured that the government will maintain a safe, comfortable and controlled situation.
He added that videos circulating on social media related to demonstrations along with narratives of unrest are untrue. Those responsible for spreading the hoaxes, he said, are being sought and will face legal proceedings.
“I declare that video to be untrue. There is nothing like that in Indonesia, in our homeland. There are hoaxes like that. Perhaps it happened in the past. At present and going forward, there is none,” he said.
On the other hand, Djamari said the public is welcome to hold demonstrations in an orderly and non-anarchic manner. He stressed that the government has never prohibited the public from expressing their opinions.
“There is no prohibition on demonstrations, none at all. Holding a demonstration is an expression of public opinion. No one prohibits that,” he explained.
“What is prohibited and not desired are anarchic actions. Anarchic actions. If, for example, a demonstration is held in an orderly manner to convey criticism, that is perfectly fine,” he added.
