Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Calls for Increased Patrols to Prevent Vigilantism

Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago has called for heightened patrols by the TNI and Polri to prevent acts of vigilantism among the public. The statement was made following a closed-door meeting on ‘Synergy in Maintaining Political and National Security Stability’ at his office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (5/8/2026), which was attended by the Attorney General, the TNI Commander, and the National Police Chief.

‘The first effort is prevention. Police patrols should actively circulate in the area, night patrols should be increased, regardless of whether incidents occur at midnight, evening, or morning. Operations must continue,’ Djamari told reporters.

He explained that if friction occurs within the community, security forces will act swiftly to localise the situation to prevent the conflict from spreading. ‘At the moment of an incident, the police force, possibly reinforced by the TNI, must immediately stop it and localise it so the issue does not develop elsewhere,’ he said.

Regarding conflict resolution, Djamari noted that the government is promoting a familial approach, which has proven effective in calming several cases. However, he stressed that the key remains prevention, urging local governments to play an active role in educating the public so that minor issues do not escalate into mass conflicts.

‘We ask regional governments to provide understanding to the community and prevent problems from being blown out of proportion,’ he added. Djamari also called on the public to maintain a conducive atmosphere, especially ahead of the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence, hoping that citizens can celebrate the occasion peacefully and joyfully.
