Coordinating Minister for Human Development Warns of Hydrometereological Disaster Risks During Homecoming Period
Coordinating Minister for Human Development (Menko PMK) Pratikno has reminded the public to remain vigilant about the potential for natural disasters during the Eid homecoming period in 2026.
He issued this alert given the potential for elevated rainfall levels during the Eid holiday season.
“We must also be cautious and anticipate wet hydrometereological disasters, which according to the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) still have medium to high potential in several regions of Indonesia,” Pratikno said at the Coordinating Ministry for Strategic Policy (KSP) office in Jakarta on Wednesday (11 March).
Pratikno attributed the high rainfall to cyclone development in the southern coastal areas of Java, Sulawesi, and Papua.
“This is one of the things we continue to anticipate, so the homecoming period also has the potential to occur during still-rainy weather conditions,” he said.
He requested relevant ministries and agencies to take preventative steps to mitigate disasters resulting from high rainfall.
Pratikno also announced that the government is conducting weather modification operations (OMC) supported by the BMKG and the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB).
“This will continue to be carried out with support from 191 BMKG regional technical implementation units that continuously monitor field conditions,” he added.
