Coordinating Minister Airlangga: Indonesia Has Achieved Diesel Self-Sufficiency
Jakarta — Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced on Monday 16 March 2026 that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in diesel fuel production.
“In terms of fuel, we have diesel self-sufficiency,” Airlangga said during a media gathering at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs office in Jakarta.
The self-sufficiency is calculated based on a diesel balance sheet showing a surplus of 4.84 million kilolitres, comprised of production of 43.94 million kilolitres against domestic consumption of 39.1 million kilolitres.
Airlangga identified B40 biodiesel production as a key factor driving the diesel surplus. “So for diesel we have already achieved self-sufficiency with a surplus,” he added.
The diesel surplus has emerged amid elevated global crude oil prices, which have also pushed Indonesia’s crude oil reference price (ICP) higher. Oil prices have surged due to disruptions to crude distribution through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by conflict in the Middle East.
These supply chain disruptions have raised concerns about potential oil scarcity. In response, Airlangga stated that President Prabowo Subianto has instructed measures to accelerate fuel availability and implement fuel consumption conservation measures.
“The President also issued directives yesterday regarding the impact of the Iran-US-Israel conflict, aimed at accelerating fuel supply availability and implementing measures to reduce fuel consumption,” he said.
