The government has confirmed that it will implement a work-from-home (WFH) policy for one day per week for civil servants (ASN) and private sector workers after Eid al-Fitr in 2026. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that the technical regulations for implementing WFH are still being drafted. However, the policy is assured to take effect after Eid. He confirmed that the policy will apply to ASN and is encouraged for private sector workers, with the exception that public services must continue to operate normally. The implementation of WFH will also be coordinated with the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri). “(Applicable to) ASN as well as recommendations for the private sector. But not for public services. (Coordination later) with Kemnaker and Mendagri,” he said. The government has set this work flexibility policy as a response to disruptions in supply and high global oil prices due to the war in the Middle East. It is hoped that this can support energy savings. On the same occasion, Finance Minister (Menkeu) Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa admitted that the government has rough calculations regarding the potential savings in fuel use from implementing the WFH policy one day per week. These savings are estimated to reach around 20 percent, although the figure is still an initial estimate. “There is a very rough calculation. It’s not me who calculated it, (a) rough (calculation), one-fifth, approximately 20 percent,” said the State Treasurer. According to him, the WFH policy is only implemented one day per week because it considers work effectiveness. He emphasised that not all jobs can be done optimally if WFH is implemented for too long. “No matter how WFH is done, sometimes there are things that cannot be done well with WFH,” he said.
