Coordinating Minister AHY: Land Subsidence and Tidal Floods Threaten Tens of Millions of North Coast Residents

President RI received several Ministers of the Merah Putih Cabinet at Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5/2026). The meeting discussed various strategic issues in infrastructure and regional development, including the development and protection of Java’s North Coast.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), explained that the meeting with the President covered, among other things, land subsidence on Java Island. The government aims to address the frequent tidal flooding along Java’s coastline.

“We know that the current conditions face challenges, both from land subsidence and tidal flooding due to rising sea levels. Saving tens of millions of people on the North Coast, as well as their economy, is crucial, because there are many industrial centres and special economic zones there,” said AHY to reporters after the meeting.

According to AHY, the government will build a giant sea wall along 575 kilometres. In constructing the giant sea wall, he added, the government is not only focusing on protecting coastal areas but also making it part of efforts to create new economic growth centres.

Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, explained that the government is currently perfecting the master plan for development by involving various stakeholders. However, the study process is not yet complete.

“So it’s not just building the giant sea wall, but also points to boost the economy, increase investment, and provide positive impacts on the economy. We are reviewing this, providing input, and conducting studies,” said Rosan.

According to him, the project is expected to give birth to new economic zones that can drive investment activities and regional development. “Thus, this can create a new economic point not only in Jakarta but also in the areas where the giant sea wall will be built,” said Rosan.
