Cook, Obasanjo meet in Nigeria
LAGOS, Abuja (AFP): British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook was on Wednesday expected to meet Nigeria's president-elect for talks focusing on Nigeria's reentry to the Commonwealth and Nigeria's future involvement in Sierra Leone.
Cook was to meet retired general Olusegun Obasanjo at his farm at Otta, northeast of Lagos, on the second day of a two-day trip to Nigeria.
Cook will be the highest ranking foreign official to meet the retired general since he was declared president-elect last week following a controversial election whose outcome is still being disputed by his opponent, former finance minister Olu Falae.
British officials traveling with Cook told AFP the two were likely to discuss terms for Nigeria's reentry to the Commonwealth -- from which it was suspended in 1995 over human rights abuses -- as well as the crisis in Sierra Leone.
