Convoy marks antinarcotic conference

BANDUNG, West Java: A convoy of 1,300 motor vehicles along
major roads in Bandung over the weekend marked the first national
conference and third anniversary of the Antinarcotic Movement
(Granat) in the city.

During the parade, activists from Granat's 26 regional
branches distributed leaflets to local citizens, calling on them
to join the war on drug use and distribution.

Granat central board chairman Hendry Yosodiningrat said the
week-long conference in Bandung would determine strategic and
tactical measures in waging the war, while seeking breakthroughs
for the advancement of Granat's moral action.

Jhony Alwy, chairman of the West Java branch, revealed that
the number of narcotics victims in Indonesia had reached 5
million and his province alone had some 50,000 drug addicts.

"Funds worth Rp 3.6 trillion are annually spent in vain by the
addicts on various kinds of illicit drugs and highly potent
medicines just to get stoned," he added. --Antara
