Convicted Sexual Offender Mas Bechi Released on Parole Since August 2025
The convict in the sexual violence case against female students, Muhammad Subchi Azal Tsani, alias Mas Bechi, has quietly been released from Malang Class I Prison since August 2025. Mas Bechi was not granted an absolute release, but is instead undergoing a parole programme.
Here are several facts regarding the release of Mas Bechi, the convict in the sexual violence case at the Majma’al Bahrain Shiddiqiyyah Islamic Boarding School, Ploso, Jombang, East Java.
Bechi Sentenced to 7 Years
Bechi is known to be the convict in a case of sexual violence against his students. The Surabaya District Court sentenced him to 7 years in prison in November 2022. In the case, the panel of judges stated that Bechi was proven legally and convincingly guilty of committing criminal acts related to offences against the victims’ sexual honour. The sentence was lighter than the prosecutor’s demand for 16 years in prison. However, Bechi has been breathing the air of freedom since August 2025 from Malang Class I Prison.
Granted Parole
Bechi obtained parole based on the Decree of the Minister of Immigration and Correctional Services Number PAS-1429.PK.05.03 of 2025, dated 15 August 2025. The Head of Malang Class I Prison, Christo Victor Nixon Toar, stated that Bechi’s sentence period was calculated from his initial detention on 8 July 2022. “According to the available data, the inmate Subchi Azal Tsani received parole in August 2025,” Christo confirmed on Tuesday (22/9/2026).
Bechi Served Remaining Sentence at Malang Prison
During his imprisonment, Bechi was transferred between several detention facilities before finally serving the remainder of his sentence at Malang Class I Prison. Regarding the reduction of his sentence, Christo revealed that Bechi did not receive a general remission on the 17 August 2025 Independence Day commemoration. This was because Bechi’s Parole Decree had already been issued by the Directorate General of Corrections two days earlier, on 15 August 2025. Five days after the decree was issued, Mas Bechi was released on parole from Malang Class I Prison. “The individual is currently undergoing the Parole Programme under the supervision of the Correctional Centre,” explained Christo.
Deemed to Have Good Behaviour
According to Christo, one of the considerations for granting parole was that the Correctional Observation Team (TPP) assessed Bechi as having exhibited good behaviour during his time in prison. “According to the TPP assessment, the individual behaved well while in prison and participated well in both Personality and Independence Development Programmes,” said Christo.
Release Regretted by Women’s Activists
Bechi’s release is viewed as an affront to justice, particularly for the victims of his sexual violence. Various condemnations from women’s activists immediately emerged. One such criticism came from the Chairperson of the Indonesian Women Care Community (KoPPI), Ya’qud Ananda Gudban. She regretted the lenient sentences and the minimal punishment from the start of the judicial process. According to Nanda, loopholes for sentence reductions through remission or parole should have been anticipated early by imposing maximum penalties on sexual offenders within religious educational environments. “We deeply regret that since the verdict was handed down, it has been far from the values of justice. This should have been anticipated from the beginning with maximum punishment, so there would be no loopholes for light sentences through remissions,” Nanda told detikJatim.
‘Good Behaviour’ Cited as a Classic Excuse
Nanda also emphasised that granting parole to sexual offenders should not be based solely on procedural legal considerations or classic reasons such as ‘good behaviour’ during imprisonment. She argued that prisons must consider non-legal factors, including victim recovery, psychological protection, and concrete steps to prevent sexual violence from recurring.
Parole Supervision Questioned
Sharp scrutiny is now directed at the Correctional Centre (Bapas), the authority responsible for supervising and guiding Bechi during his parole. This is particularly concerning as the convict is reported to have returned to the environment of the Majma’al Bahrain Shiddiqiyyah Islamic Boarding School in Ploso, Jombang, which is known as a closed community. The public clearly recalls how the initial arrest of Mas Bechi was marked by dramatic tension, involving hundreds of police personnel. “Since the parole programme has already been granted, Bapas as the supervisor must monitor and pay very close attention. Has he achieved a deterrent effect? What is the guarantee that such behaviour will not recur against potential victims in a closed environment?” she added.
Case Began in 2017
Mas Bechi, the son of the defendant in the sexual assault of female students that shocked East Java, is back in the spotlight. Mas Bechi is the son of Kiai Muchtar Mu’thi, the leader of the Shiddiqiyyah Islamic Boarding School in Jombang, East Java. Bechi has been committing sexual abuse against students since 2017. The case was reported to the Jombang Police and transferred to the East Java Regional Police. In 2020, Mas Bechi’s status was upgraded to suspect after police examined 36 witnesses and 8 expert witnesses. Physical evidence from the victims’ medical examinations was also secured. However, arresting Mas Bechi proved difficult, as police officers attempting to take him into custody faced resistance from his followers, leading to him being placed on the Most Wanted list.
